[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-03-01 Summary: Excellent value for the money ... There are many electronic scales on the market for use in the kitchen, but most are overpriced, limited in weighing capacity, and limited in features. This scale isn't the fanciest, but it doesn't cost the most, it has an 11 lb capacity, it remembers your display settings from one use to the next, and it takes standard batteries which don't cost and arm and a leg. Highly recommended. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Colors galore! Make your scale match your kitchen or office. The Primo line comes in 11 eye catching colors from a warm red to a sky blue. These digital scales are economically priced and very easy to use with its two-button operation....more

Frugal Gourmet - A Colonial Christmas With Friends [VHS]
Customer Reviews
Editorial Reviews ... Amazon.com | Part history lesson, part exotic cuisine experience, Jeff Smith's The Frugal Gourmet: A Colonial Christmas takes us to the heart of early-American civilization in colonial Williamsburg for a look at the holiday treats of yesteryear. Smith alternates between visits at Williamsburg (where turkey, as popular with colonialists as it is today, was prepared on a labor-intensive kitchen-hearth spit) and his own modern kitchen. If you've always wanted to create a truly old-fashioned Christmas menu, this...more
Matzoh Ball Gumbo: Culinary Tales of the Jewish South
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-05-23 Summary: Matzo balls and memories ... As a Deep South Jewish expatriate, I can't say enough about how thoroughly Marcie Cohen Ferris did her research. There is no doubt that she has covered the differences-and similarities-of the various southern states with great heart and accuracy! The sheer volume of names of those she got family information from is more than admirable. The book belongs in every Jewish household-northern and southern! And non-Jewish readers will get a wonderful picture of the influence food had in Southern Jewish homes-part of American ...more

Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Since early colonial times in America, Jewish southerners have been tempted by delectable regional foods. Because some of these foods--including pork and shellfish--have been traditionally forbidden to Jews by religious dietary laws, southern Jews face a special predicament. In a culinary journey through the Jewish South, Arkansas native Marcie Cohen Ferris explores how southern Jews embraced, avoided, and adapted southern food and, in the process, have found themselves at home. From colonial...more
Food in Colonial and Federal America (Food in American History)
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2008-09-16 Summary: Too General For Me ... Being a huge fan of Sandy Oliver and her book Salt Water Foodways, I have to admit I was a little disapointed by this volume. Not only was it expensive but it very general and broad in scope. If you are unfamiliar with 18th and early 19th century cooking, including native american, then this will be a good book for it does a very credible and accurate job of giving you the idea of what foods were like and why for that time period. But for a serious food historian it may be a little bit of a disapointment though it ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-01-23 Summary: Use as a Research Tool ... This book brought a number of primary sources together to form one of the most comprehensive books on the subject of food in Colonial America. The author had a thorough understanding of the subject, and not only provided apt descriptions of cooking in the period but also provided numerous visuals to aid the reader envisage what stoves and cookware looked like. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to become more familiar with the history of food. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | The success of the new settlements in what is now the United States depended on food. This book tells about the bounty that was here and how Europeans forged a society and culture, beginning with help from the Indians and eventually incorporating influences from African slaves. They developed regional food habits with the food they brought with them, what they found here, and what they traded for all around the globe. Their daily life is illuminated through descriptions of the typical...more
