Yes, the steam does come out and yes, the button does get warm. So, what. You aren't suppose to open it until the bell goes off and the button is fine at that time. It makes perfect dipping sticks. So easy, that my 8 year old can do it herself. It was a hit at a Girl Scout breakfast with all the kids and parents. It's a Cuisinart which means you are getting a quality machine.
